Planning and On-Site Tips

Most metals from construction and demolition can be recycled. Examples include: roofing, cladding, rebar, steel beams, aluminium windows and door frames, wire mesh, plumbing fixtures and piping.

Use local waste recycling directories (such as the Recycling Operators of New Zealand RONZ - www.ronz.org.nz), and the Yellow Pages (www.yellowpages.co.nz) to find local scrap metal merchants. Obtain the specifications for those operators and follow their instructions to ensure highest recycling rates.

Minimise contamination by

  • Providing clear instruction to your construction and demolition clients
  • Provide skips and trailers and other containers to separate metal from other wastes for collection and transportation
  • Use the standardised RONZ recycling symbols for the different types of metals and their different products, to provide clear signage.
