Key Steps
To Resource Efficiency

1. Assess what materials can be recycled. This depends the project, location and the recycling market. Target the most common materials. Remember! True cost of waste = purchase cost + transport cost + storage cost + disposal costs.

2. Set your targets, establishing the level of action that your company will aim to achieve. E.g. to "reduce waste by 30% over the next 12 months". Targets set must be meaningful (i.e. everyone in the company can work towards it), and appropriate (i.e. achievable and realistic).

3. Develop a Waste Management Plan; specifying what needs to be done to achieve the goals and targets you have set. All contract documents should include a copy of this plan.

4. Educating Site Workers; so that all personnel involved in the construction project are aware of the waste reduction objectives. One person (ideally in a position of responsibility) should oversee all waste management efforts.

5. Involving Subcontractors and Suppliers; so subcontractors understand how recyclable materials will be managed on site, preferably in a formal agreement. Suppliers should be encouraged to use reusable packaging and pallets, coordinate 'just-in-time' deliveries and offer products with recycled content.

6. Implementing the Plan; ensuring it can proceed without difficulty, with all the Who, What, Where, When and How questions (asked in #3 above) covered.

7. Resource Tracking; ensuring material recycling/reuse/diversion targets are being met, all waste materials are reaching the appropriate destinations, and highlighting where improvements can be made.

8. Assessment and Review; evaluating the costs, benefits, things that worked well and areas for improvement, so that lessons can be learnt for next time.
