Case Study: Extension
Auckland Hospital (1997)

Summary
Civil & Civic Pty Ltd were chosen to design, project manage and construct the $3.6 million extensions to the Oncology Department at Auckland Hospital. They reduced waste generated at the site by modifying the design, recycling and reusing materials, and specifying recycled materials where possible.

Case Study: Construction
Te Puni St Warehouse (1997)

Summary
Jarrah Construction has been involved in cleaner production processes for some time, as a pragmatic means of trimming costs and getting better value for materials. Good housekeeping during the construction of a large, tilt-up slab warehouse in Lower Hutt included the implementation of the following: off-site prefabrication of the slabs; a simple design requiring a minimum amount of fixings and details; the sorting and de-nailing of timber for use on the next site; keeping a clean and tidy site at all times; and sub-trades collecting much of their own waste.

Case Study: Refurbishment
Sheraton Hotel (1995)

Summary
The Sherton Hotel and Towers undertook a major refurbishment project within the hotel. The hotel required the refurbishment contractors (Lend Lease) to minimise waste as far as practical. This translated into the careful removal of the existing furnishings in 184 rooms, with any furnishings that could not be reused within the hotel were made available for sale. Furnishings that could be sold included carpet, furniture, light and water fittings. Items of low value, such as wood, mirrors and vanities were given away for free. A total of $52,000 has been recovered from the sale of these items.

The Sheraton Hotel is one of the larger hotels in Auckland.
